How much does it cost to hire a van?
There are three main costs that can be associated with hiring a van. These are daily hire rate, excess reduction & milage/kilometre charges.
Daily Hire Rate
The daily hire rate refers to the cost of hiring the van itself for a 24 hour period. Typically the daily hire rate is more expensive in the weekends and lower mid-week - this is because there is significantly more demand for van hire on the weekends than during the week.
For u-save, you can see our base daily rental prices for van hire are listed above, however please note these are subject to change. Our van hire rates are generally higher than the prices listed in the weekends (depending on demand for that specific weekend. If you book with us midweek, you'll enjoy a 15% discount on the rates above!
Excess Reduction
All van hire providers will offer a base level of insurance which limits your liability for damage caused to the truck during your hire period to a set amount. You may additionally opt to reduce your excess buy paying for excess reduction cover.
At u-save, we offer two excess reduction options. For an additional $65 per day, your excess can be reduced to $0 (vs $3,500) with no security bond required. Alternatively, you can reduce your liability to $500 ($500 security bond required) for an additional $45 per day.
Kilometre Charges
Many van hire providers also charge a fee per kilometre to help cover the Road User Charges & maintenance required for vans.
At u-save, our rental vans are Petrol and therefore kilometre charges are included as part of your daily hire rate.

Do you offer van hire specials?
Yes we usually have a van hire special running - you can check out what is on offer on our specials page.
Typically our van hire specials are for mid-week hires, or for one way hires when we need vans moved between our depots. Keep an eye on our specials page to nab a great deal!
Can I hire a van for half a day?

Can I hire a van for business use?
Absolutely, we offer vans for hire to business customers. If you are using the van as a one-off - please ensure that a credit card in the name of the hirer is provided, otherwise we will not be able to provide the van.
For repeat use business customers, contact our team to set up a business account with us. This will make hiring vans repeatedly a breeze for your team, with no credit card required and invoice payment.
Do you offer one way van hire?
Yes we offer one-way van hire between any of our depots. Please note, additional charges may apply for one-way hires.
If you are moving items from Auckland to Christchurch, or Auckland to Queenstown, you can easily hire a van and get yourself down to the South Island. Our vehicles are insured for ferry travel so cross island travel is not a problem. Hiring one of our vans and getting the item down there yourself is significantly cheaper than hiring a moving company to facilitate this for you.
Similarly, if you are moving from Queenstown or Christchurch to Auckland, our one way van hire is an option for you. We often offer specials for one way hire from Christchurch to Auckland, so keep an eye on our specials page!
How much bigger is the High Top Cargo Van?
Our High Top Cargo Van has another 20cm height compared to our regular cargo van. This extra height allows for queen beds to fit upright in the van, allowing extra room for additional items.
